Prioritizing Projects with Index Cards

By Jared Dees

I organize all of the projects and tasks I have to do in Trello, which stacks “cards” vertically in lists. Within each card I can add checklists, notes, documents, links, deadlines, and almost anything else I would need for a project. It is an amazing tool that I have relied on constantly every day for many years.

Trello helps me keep things organized, but it hasn’t helped me finish projects.

Like a lot of entrepreneurs and creative types, I have ideas for all kinds of different projects. I work on one thing to about 90-95% of completion then get distracted by another fun idea. This leads to a lot of projects that are just sitting there in need of not-so-creative attention to detail.

I started trying something new last week with index cards and it is really helping.

I wrote down all the creative projects I have started or want to do on separate index cards. I stacked them on top of each other only showing one project at the top.

Now, I must finish everything related to that project that I can until I move on to the next one.

I feel more productive. I am motivated to push through the difficult parts of projects so I can get to the fun creative beginnings of the next one.

This week I started taking the same approach to launching this projects. I have to stacks of index cards: one of creative projects/products and one for marketing/launching those projects/products.

We will see how this goes, but so far it has helped me get through some projects that have been sitting on my Trello board for months (okay a year!).
