Gospel Meditation: Fourth Sunday of Advent

By Jared Dees

The Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38)

Let the following questions to guide you through a process of Lectio Divina:

LECTIO (Reading): What does this passage say that everyone should understand?

  • Why does Mary initially doubt the message of the angel?
  • How can Mary bear the Son of God if she has had no relations with a man?
  • What proof does the angel give to Mary that this is truly possible?

MEDITATION (Meditation): What does the text say to me, today, and to my life?

  • Would I respond to the Angel Gabriel as Mary did?
  • What do I think is impossible? How can I place my full trust in God that this is possible?
  • How can I be more like a “handmaid of the Lord”?

ORATIO (Prayer): What can I say to the Lord in response to his word?

  • What fear do I need to set aside in my life?
  • What help can I ask of the Lord to do what feels impossible?
  • What can I ask of Mary to pray to God on my behalf?

CONTEMPLATIO (Contemplation): What conversion of the mind, heart, and life is the Lord asking of me?

  • How will I seek to be full of grace in my life?
  • How can I expect the impossible from God?
  • How can I be more like a “handmaid of the Lord”?
