A Note from the Real Author
John is the fictional father of two kids that would rather play video games than read the Bible. They think it’s boring, so John wrote them a story to convince them otherwise. They said they wanted a story of dragons, swords, magic, adventure, romance, and more. So John sat down to write . . .

Chapter 3
The boy could hardly contain his excitement. Just moments ago he was bored and fishing on a boat. Now he was finally going on his quest. He was going to become an an Adventurer just like his brother and his parents.
He followed behind the strange Adventurer and got a better look at him. He was not like the other Adventurers he had known. This man had no sword and no armor. All he carried with him was a staff. His clothing was simple. He did not seem to have a single magic item anywhere. The boy began to wonder whether this man had really gone on any adventures.
The first time his brother came home from an adventure, all he could talk about were his new magical items. He defeated a monster on top of a mountain and gained a sword of fire. He fought his way through an evil forest and earned a magic bow and arrows. The boy caught his older brother practicing with the sword in the night and nearly catching their house on fire.
His parents had all sorts of magical items, too. They had been on so many great quests at this point. It made the boy sad just thinking about all the adventures they went on without him. He had been stuck at home all this time. But now this strange Adventurer was here to lead him on his way. He couldn’t wait to find out what was in store for them.
“So, what is our quest? Defeat a dragon? Save a princess? Overthrow the evil emperor? Oh, is it going out to search for ancient artifacts?” asked the boy.
The Adventurer simply shook his head.
“Hmm, okay. So, where are we heading then?” said the boy.
“On our first mission,” the man said.
The boy finally caught up to the Adventurer and walked by his side. “Awesome! Okay, I’m ready, but listen I don’t have a sword or any items or anything yet. Shouldn’t we start there? I mean you don’t seem very well armed, either.”
“We won’t need any of that on this quest,” said the Adventurer.
“What? Why not? Won’t we die?” said the boy.
That made the man pause and look at towards the boy. He wondered what he said to finally get his attention.
“We’re here,” said the Adventurer.
The boy looked around but all he saw were grass, tress, and mountains in the distance.
Then he heard a noise. It sounded like a battle.
“Let’s go,” said the Adventurer.
Chapter 4
The boy’s heart started to beat with excitement. His very first battle! He stayed close to the Adventurer. He knew he was still unarmed and unable to defend himself.
They walked closer to the sound of the battle. The boy wondered if there was a monster or some evil minion of the emperor fighting against a hero on a quest. He looked from side to side to make sure they weren’t in danger.
As they finally arrived at the noise of fighting, the boy couldn’t believe what he saw. It was just one man slashing his sword through the air.
“Yah!” shouted the man with a swinging blow through the air. He saw the boy and the Adventurer as he spun around.
“Stand back!” he said. “There is an evil fiend here!”
The boy looked around. He didn’t see anything.
Then the man was struck down as if a burst of wind swept him off his feet. The boy couldn’t see it, but he heard it. It was an evil voice that gave him chills.
“You!” said the evil voice. “What have you to do with us? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are!”
The Adventurer was not afraid. He raised his staff and shouted, “Be silent!”
The tip of his staff burst into a blinding white light and for a moment the boy saw a dark figure near the man on the ground.
The evil voice screeched in agony. “I know who you are, Holy One!” it screeched in pain.
Then the light faded and there was silence.
The boy just stood there with his mouth open wide in awe.
Chapter 5
The Adventurer knelt down and touched the man’s forehead gently. He opened his eyes and grabbed his sword with a jolt.
“Is it gone?” he said.
The Adventurer nodded and asked, “How did you come upon that evil spirit?”
The man coughed and shook his head. “I don’t know. I was traveling along the road. I’m a quest for a nearby village. They have were raided by a group of goblins and I set out to recover what they stole. I came across that unseen fiend and tried to fight it off.”
“You would have lost if we hadn’t found you,” the Adventurer said. “That was a very evil spirit. I’m sorry you had to experience that. He wasn’t after you anyway. He was looking for me. Now he knows I am here.”
“Is he gone?” the boys asked.
“No, not gone but he has fled from here,” said the Adventurer.
The man rose to his feet. “Thank you, sir. I don’t know how you defeated that thing. I am in your debt. Is there anything I can do to repay you?”
The Adventurer shook his head.
“Well, would you like to join my on my quest against the goblins? I could use the help,” he said.
The boy got excited about this possibility. A real quest! But the Adventurer just shook his head at this as well.
“I must be on my way, then. I wish you both the best. If I shall ever see you again, I will surely thank you.” The man sheathed his sword and went on his way.
The boy just watched as the man walked away. When would it be his turn to battle a fiend or a goblin or some other evil beast?
“Let’s go,” said the Adventurer. “There is more work to be done.”
A Conversation about The Adventurer
“That’s it for now,” John said to his kids. “What do you think of the story so far?”
“When does the boy get to have an actual adventure?” asked his son.
“The adventure already started, silly. He just doesn’t realize it yet,” his sister corrected him.
“That’s right,” their father said. “Any guesses as to what that adventure is going to take them?”
“Well, this is a story inspired by the Bible, so I guess it is going to take them to the cross,” said his daughter.
“Yep, but you are getting ahead of us. We’re only in the first chapter of the Gospel of Mark so far,” said the dad.
“What story was this?” his daughter said.
The kids thought for a moment, then the son exclaimed, “When Jesus healed the man with the unclean spirit!”
“That’s right,” said the father. “But it won’t be the last time our heroes face the fiends. There’s a lot more to the story ahead so get ready for some more to come.
