The Weight of a Mass Book Summary
A poor widow begs a baker for a scrap of bread, but the baker is unwilling to help her. She offers to give one Mass for the baker in payment for the bread. He would rather have real money and decides to prove to her the lack of value in her offer. The baker writes “ONE MASS” on a tiny piece of paper and sets it on a scale. Then he sets a piece of bread on the other side of the scale, but the Mass weighs more! He continues to add more food, but nothing will tip the scale. Even the royal wedding cake couldn’t tip the scale. Finally convinced, the baker offers the woman anything she wants, but she takes only a slice of bread.
