The Weight of a Mass: Book Summary, Questions, and Worksheet

By Jared Dees

The Weight of a Mass Book Cover

The Weight of the Mass is a book by Josephine Nobisso and the importance of the Eucharist and the mass in our lives today.

The book is available in paperback and hardcover.

Read the book to your kids or show this video reading of the book on YouTube:

The Weight of a Mass Book Summary

A poor widow begs a baker for a scrap of bread, but the baker is unwilling to help her. She offers to give one Mass for the baker in payment for the bread. He would rather have real money and decides to prove to her the lack of value in her offer. The baker writes “ONE MASS” on a tiny piece of paper and sets it on a scale. Then he sets a piece of bread on the other side of the scale, but the Mass weighs more! He continues to add more food, but nothing will tip the scale. Even the royal wedding cake couldn’t tip the scale. Finally convinced, the baker offers the woman anything she wants, but she takes only a slice of bread.

The Weight of the Mass Book Reflection Questions

  1. What are some of your most valuable things? (As the story says, a Mass is more important than every one of these things.)
  2. How have people grown cold and carless in the practice of their faith today?
  3. For whom would you like to offer your next Mass? What intentions would you like to pray for them?

The Weight of the Mass Worksheet

The Weight of a Mass Worksheet

Using this worksheet, kids will reflect on the things they treasure that are less valuable than a Mass and select an intention to offer for their next Mass.
