I’ve worked in digital marketing for about ten years now. Somehow I keep falling into the same temptation again and again.
When it comes to social media marketing, everyone wants to get more followers.
We compare ourselves to other influencers or other businesses similar to ours and we feel bad about how many more followers they have than we do.
We watch videos and webinars (sadly, I watched one yesterday) looking for the latest tactic to help us increase the number of people who follow us.
We fall into the false belief that a large following on social media equates to success.
This is all a facade. The follower count is a reflection of something else, much more important.
What if we ignored the numbers and approached social media in a completely different way?
What if our motivation was connection and change instead?
Goal #1: Connection
There is a community of people on various social networks who are connected by a common interest and helping each other grow. They are sharing ideas and motivating each other to keep going when things get difficult.
Within that community there are influencers who define directions and give a clear vision for what life could be like. They have large numbers of followers, but they are not distant voices on a stage. They are constantly serving the people in the community and connecting to people there one comment and direct message at a time.
Goal #2: Change
To serve this community is to help one person in that community change for the better. Help one person and then another one.
To do this, you have to have a clear goal and vision for where to go together. Maybe you are already there. Maybe you have a path that you would like to share with others. Define it. Describe it. Name it. Start telling others how to get from point A to point B and do it with a story.
From Goals to Action
So, how do you succeed in social media?
- Find a community.
- Connect with members and influencers.
- Clearly define and share a vision for where you can go together.
