According to a legend, Saint Patrick banished all the snakes from Ireland. While the story is only a legend (Ireland was never known to have snakes) we can still learn an invaluable lesson about faith by reflecting on it.
Saint Patrick traveled across Ireland preaching and teaching about Christianity. Everywhere he went, however, the people whispered in fear. The fields and forests were full of evil creatures slithering along the ground. Even speaking of these snakes made the people tremble in fear.
One day, Saint Patrick climbed a hill overlooking the sea. He thrust his staff into the ground and raised his arms in prayer and proclaimed:
“I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, and summon the powers between me and these evils. May God’s shield protect us and save us from the snares of devils. Be gone! Amen!”
Suddenly, a great wind blew, and the earth shook. Hissing snakes slithered from every direction rushing by the hill and sliding into the sea. Saint Patrick took up his staff, bowed his head in prayer, and returned to a nearby village.
The people there rejoiced! The snakes were gone! They showered Saint Patrick with praise and glory shouting, “Patrick has saved us!”
“This was not the work of a man, but the work of God. He alone deserves all glory and praise,” the saint replied.
“Then we are grateful to God! For the snakes are gone for good,” cried the crowd.
But Saint Patrick rebuked them saying, “Yet the snakes remain in your hearts. Turn away from sin and temptation. Do not let fear keep you away from the Lord, for he is the one who will banish the pain and poison within your hearts.”
