To Heal, Proclaim, and Teach: Chapter 11

Ministry with College Students

To Heal, Proclaim, and Teach

For the first time in their lives, college students set out to forge a life away from the comfort of their parents. It is a time of questioning nearly everything and testing out assumptions and beliefs about life that are now put to the test against reality.

There are beacons of hope on many college campuses throughout the United States. Passionate young students live their faith and invite others to share in celebration of God’s presence in the world. The many people responsible for Catholic campus ministry at colleges are turning the tide against religious apathy and mindless partying. In this chapter, we will look at a few of the best-known models for campus ministry, what is working for them, and what they do differently to attract lost college students into an encounter with Christ and his Church.

Top Takeaways from Chapter 11

One-on-One Relationships

Instead of competing with other college clubs, groups, and programs, focus on personal relationships.

Doors Open

With a clear focus on discipleship, facilitate rather than force encounters with Christ.

Admonish the Sin

Don’t condone college culture, instead invite students to experience opportunities of healing and mercy.

Prepare with Prayer

If you could teach only one thing through campus ministry, model a strong prayer life.
