This story is featured in a collection of Bible stories for kids called Pray without Ceasing: Bible Stories for Kids about Prayer.
It can be difficult to find quiet time. It is a challenge for everyone, both adults and kids. But finding that quiet time for prayer is very important. In this story, the prophet Elijah travels to a mountain, where he will encounter God’s presence.
As you read this story, pay attention to the way Elijah finally experiences God’s presence.
Elijah took shelter in a cave on a mountain named Horeb (also called Mount Sinai).
While resting in the cave, he heard the word of the Lord saying, “Go out of the cave and stand on the mountain, because I am about to pass by.”
A great wind blew through the cave. The wind was so strong that rocks broke off of the mountain.
But the Lord was not in the wind.
Then Elijah felt an earthquake shake the ground.
But the Lord was not in the earthquake.
Then a fire erupted on the mountain. It burned hot and bright.
But the Lord was not in the fire.
Then there was silence.
When Elijah heard the silence, he wrapped his face in his cloak. He went out and stood at the entrance to the cave.
For the Lord was waiting for him in the silence.
