The Little Elephant and the Hunters: A Psalm 10 Story for Kids

By Jared Dees

Psalm 10 Story

A large herd of elephants roamed freely throughout the land for many years. They were happy and thriving until the day that the hunters arrived.

They were mean and greedy men. The elephants lived in fear of being killed or captured.

Some of the elephants started to say, “God does not care about us. We are doomed.”

But one little elephant gave the rest of the herd hope. She was young but full of joy no matter how badly things seemed to the others. It was a great gift in a time of great fear.

In the middle of the night, two hunters came and captured the little elephant. When the rest of the herd awoke in the morning, they saw that she was gone. The herd was full of despair.

The little elephant was tied up with rope and led away by the hunters. The greedy men talked about all the money there were going to make. They laughed at the weak, little elephant.

Yet, the little elephant remained hopeful. She prayed to God asking for help. Her heart was filled with the confidence that she would be okay because the Lord would hear her prayer.

A great storm started to form and a rain came down harder than it ever had in years. The hunters panicked. They needed to take cover, but they didn’t want to lose the elephant.

“Let’s kill it and come back to get her later,” said one of the hunter.

“No, let’s just get out here,” said the other.

But the hunter didn’t listen. He set the rope down and pulled out a gun. The rain and wind blew harder and harder. It was difficult for the hunter to aim the rifle.

Then all of the sudden a tree branch broke above the hunter and landed on the gun. The man fell below the branch. His arm was broken and so was his gun.

“Let’s get out of here,” said the other hunter pulling him out from under the branch.

The hunters ran away and never came back. The rain stopped and the little elephant returned safely to the rest of the herd to tell the story of how God saved her from their enemies.

“You listen, LORD, to the needs of the poor; you strengthen their heart and incline your ear. You win justice for the orphaned and oppressed; no one on earth will cause terror again. ”

Psalm 10:17-18

Reflection Questions

  • Why did the elephants think that God didn’t care about them?
  • When have you experienced times when you were afraid?
  • When things get difficult in life, why do you think it helps to pray?
  • How can you give people hope when people are feeling afraid?
