The Gamer: A Fable about the Tenth Commandment

This story is one of the fifty fables in Tales of the Ten Commandments by Jared Dees. Order today at Amazon.com.

There was a boy that loved to play video games. He played games every night after finishing his homework and as much as he could on the weekends.

At school, the other kids talked about their new video games, too. A friend of his bragged about his latest new game. The boy wished he had the game, too, so he begged his mom to buy it for him.

After much begging, she finally gave in and bought the game for him. He played every day for the next week.

But another friend was playing a different game. The boy wanted this game, too. He begged his mom nonstop until finally she bought him the other game, as well.

“This is the last game for a long time, okay?” she told him.

But the next week, every kid in school was talking about a new, even better video game craze. It seemed like everyone owned it and everyone was playing it.

The boy went to his mother to ask for the game. “Please! It is the best game ever, and the other kids won’t stop talking about it,” he pleaded.

“No, I just bought you two new games. Play those. I’m not buying another one,” she said.

He begged for days, but she didn’t relent. Instead, he could only play his other games, which were now old news, and never got to join in the fun of the greatest new game that all the other kids in school were talking about.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.
