The Angel Academy: Book One (Chapters 1-2)

Imagine if angelic beings went to school to learn to become guardian angels. They would probably have a lot of questions about the strange things that humans do on earth. They would need to study humans closely and learn the best ways to lead them into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Here you will find the opening two chapters to the first in a series of books about two new angel students who are learning a lot about what it means to be an angel.

Chapter 1

The Bus

The bus to Angel Academy came to a screeching halt. The door swung open to welcome a dark-haired angel up the steps. The angel stood there hesitating. He looked back to the choir of angels he was leaving behind. It was his first day at Angel Academy and he could hardly believe it was happening.

For his entire existence he always thought he would be among the angels in the Archangel Michael’s army. Turns out God had a different plan for him and he was picked to become a guardian. That is, if he could pass the tests.

With a sigh he strode up the steps onto the bus. Standing in the aisle he could see nearly every seat was already full with a pair of angels. Only one seat had room for him to sit down.

“C’mon now, take your seat,” said the angel driver closing the door to the bus.

“Huh? Yeah sure,” said the dark-haired angel with uncertainty.

As he walked towards the open seat he realized that a very small and very excited angel was sitting near the window. She had curly, blonde hair and pale white skin. She was practically glowing with excitement.

“Can I join you?” asked the dark-haired angel.

The white angel turned and nearly screamed, “Yes!”

She extended her hand to greet him. “I’m Simchael, but you can call me Sim. What’s your name?”

“Chashakiel,” said the dark-haired angel taking the hand.

“A pleasure to meet you! Can I call you Chaz? Aren’t you excited? This is the best day in the history of the universe. Can you really believe this is happening? Can you really believe we are going to be guardian angels?”

“Well, if we can even pass the tests,” said Chaz.

“Oh we will pass them! Stick with me and you’ll do just fine. I’ve been preparing for this for literally an eternity. I was made to be a guardian! Oh wait, so were you! That’s why you’re on this bus. That’s why I am on this bus.”

Sim clasped her hands together. “Oh Chaz, I can’t wait to see and meet a real, live human. Do you think they will smell? Will we be able to smell? How–”

“Slow down and please don’t call me Chaz,” he said.

“Oh come now. It is a great nickname, Chaz,” said Sim.

“Seriously, I’d prefer . . . Do you see that?”

Chaz pointed out the window of the bus and Sim turned her head with a whirl. The two angels saw for the first time the great gates of Angel Academy where spirits go to learn to become guardian angels.

Sim began to shake with excitement. “We are really here!” she said.

Chapter 2

The Gate

“Alright, everyone off the bus,” said the driver with a twitch of her wings.

The angels filed out of the bus and into a clearing at the foot of a very large and golden gate. At the top of the gate the words “ANGEL ACADEMY” appeared in cursive lettering.

Sim and Chaz could see a vast school building through the bars of the gate. It had long steps spanning the front of the building and great stone pillars at the top of the stairway. Above each pillar stood angels with vast wings looking down upon them.

“Look at those wings!” said Sim. “I hope my wings are as white and beautiful as those! They are just stunning.”

Chaz looked back to his shoulders. He knew what was coming next. He and the other angels there would soon get their wings. These wings would be needed during the training at the academy, then even more when they became guardians.

Some of the returning students standing before the gate already had their wings. Each set of wings was different. Some looked similar, but they were completely unique. If they were the wings of birds, it would seem as though each angel was an an entirely different breed. They were unique, just like each human being is unique.

“All new students, come stand before the gate,” said one of the more experienced angels with wings like an eagle.

Sim, Chaz, and the other new angels nervously walked to the front of the group to stand before the gate. They turned and faced the crowd of angels when a cheer erupted throughout the crowd. Words of joy and welcome were shouted toward the newcomers.

“You are going to be great!” they shouted.

“God’s blessing upon you!” some said.

“God speed,” said some others.

The angel who first invited them to come forward raised his hand to quiet the crowd. He smiled and looked to the new angels in the front. There was not a sound among them.

Then the gates unlocked and slowly began to open. In the distance a booming bell began to ring signifying the start of the day.

Chaz looked at Sim and saw two glowing white wings grow out of her back. They were shining and flowing with beautiful feathers. He looked back and saw his own wings. They were much different. His were gray with specks of black. They didn’t glow like Sim’s. They were impressive, but beautiful wouldn’t be the right word to describe them. They were a stark contrast to the white wings of his companion.

When Sim saw his wings, she grimaced. “They are certainly different!” she said.

Chaz was astonished and a little embarrassed that he stuck out so much among the other angels with various shades of white in their wings.

The experienced angel came forward and said with a smile, “Every time the bell rings, angels get their wings.” He winked and reached out his wings and started to fly.

“Alright newbies. Flap those wings and follow me. I’ll escort you to your first class. Let’s go!”

Chaz inched closer to the gate looking up at the golden bars, then he felt something brush against the top of his dark hair. It was Sim. She was flying.

“You better hurry, silly, or you will be late!” she said. “Use your wings. Fly!”

Chaz started to move his wings up and down and found himself midair like the other new angels. Slowly the flew towards the doors to the academy.
