Buried Treasure in the Back Yard: A Fable about the Seventh Commandment

A man was walking through a field one day, when he saw something shiny buried amid some stones. He walked nearby and removed the stones. There he saw a shiny gold box filled with treasure. The man stood and looked to see if anyone was around. He saw that he was alone and he took the golden box and hid it under his cloak.

He hurried near his home and hid the box as best he could. The man checked to make sure the box was there again and again throughout the day. He was very afraid that someone would steal his buried treasure.

He was so afraid that it would be found that he recovered the treasure box and buried it in a different spot. Then, when he was overcome with fear that the new spot would be too easily found, so he hid the box in another spot. He did this again and again until one day he went to uncover his treasure and found that it wasn’t there.

“NO!” he shouted and broke down in tears. From that day forward he looked with suspicion and anger at anyone that walked near his home accusing them in his heart of stealing the treasure.

All the while the treasure stayed buried in his back yard. The man had simply forgotten where he last had buried it.

The Seventh Commandment: You shall not steal.
