The Mourning Moon: A Fable

The moon was in mourning. It never got to see the sun.

Whenever the moon came out, the sun fled and never stayed for the moon to see it.

This made the moon so sad one night that it decided to stop shining.

The people on earth shouted to the moon, “Where has your light gone?”

The moon said back, “I can no longer light up the night. I want to see the sun but it flees my presence again and again.”

“But moon,” they shouted back, “we will miss you without your light in the night. We love to look at your beauty. You help us dream of things beyond ourselves. The sun may give us the light of the day, but we cannot look at it as we look at you. Please, give us your light and shine throughout the night!”

The moon thought for a moment and realized for the first time that it was important to others. It realized how others relied on it to give light to the night. It never realized that it inspired people who looked upon its light.

The moon was filled with joy once more and shed light during the night for all to see.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. (Matthew 5:4)
