Here is a parable I really enjoyed in Fr. Anthony de Mello’s The Song of the Bird:
A neighbor found a man on hands and knees.
“What are you searching for?”
“My key.”
Both men got on their knees to search. After a while the neighbor says, “Where did you lose it?”
“At home.”
“Good Lord! Then why are you searching here?”
“Because it’s brighter here.”
Search for God where you lost Him.
Story Reflection
So many of us search for God in the bright places:
- The best religious books
- Beautiful places in nature
- Beautiful churches
- Wise teachers
- Holy people
- Retreats
But God is always present and most of all in the simple parts of our lives.
Start searching for him in your home among your family or in the quiet of your own room.
Story Reflection Questions
- In what “bright” places do most people you know try to find God?
- Where do you experience God the best?
- How can you find God in your home?
