We can find great peace and humility if we take the time to focus on our senses.
We can easily get bogged down in life’s busy-ness and miss the joy and beauty that is around us. We may not see the world as it truly is. We may not hear the life that is going on around us.
How do we shake ourselves out of this rut? How do we find peace in a busy day.
Try this:
Go outside, and just listen.
I was busy making dinner. My wife and older daughter were at dance class. The two younger ones were playing. Then once brought over the latest Highlights High Five magazine and asked if we could do the activity.
It was a senses and tree activity. We went outside and picked a tree. We examined it, touched it, smelled it, and then listened.
It’s fall. There are still leaves on the trees. There was a chill in the air, but it wasn’t cold.
“I hear a birdie!” my youngest daughter exclaimed. “I hear a bee,” said the other.
They were right. Once I listened, I realized that our backyard was buzzing with activity. There were birds, crickets, cars, children playing, and the sound of the cool breeze of a Fall evening.
I was filled with peace.
I don’t exactly know why, but it was a peaceful moment. That realization that the world was not just about me and my life, but that life is filled with activity all around me. How could you feel anything but peace?
Go outside and listen today. What do you hear?
