A whale is a person that consumes far more than the typical person.
In 2014 23% of Americans didn’t even read a book. There are some, however, who read more books on their own than almost everyone else combined. These people are the whales. They are reading dozens of books a year.
The challenge in marketing, therefore, is to find the whales and win them over.
A challenge that a lot of romance authors have, for example, is keeping up with their readers.
It’s a good problem to have.
Rather than writing a book for everyone or for people that don’t read very many books, ask yourself:
Will the whales like my book?
Will the people who love reading the books in my genre read and like my book? Will they tell their whale friends about it?
Find your whales and delight them.
