The Rabbit and the Rock: A Psalm 91 Story for Children

By Jared Dees

The Lord is our rock, our shelter, and our fortress! When we are afraid or in a challenging time in our lives, we can turn to him for his protection.

In this fable a rabbit avoids the hunters and finds shelter in the rock.

The Rabbit and the Rock

There was a rabbit that lived in a comfortable little whole in the woods. Winter was over and spring was starting to bloom. Things were looking beautiful around the rabbit’s hole.

As the little rabbit came out of her whole, however, she noticed a lot less rabbits in this part of the forest. There were always so many here, but today she didn’t see anybody.

She scampered through the trees that sunny afternoon and came home to the opening of her hole to see a strange object. It was a metal box and inside the box was a single carrot sitting on top of a leaf of lettuce.

Then the rabbit heard a very loud noise like the crack of a tree branch but louder.

“You missed!” she heard a voice say from the woods.

“I won’t miss this time,” said another voice. Then the loud cracking noise shot out again.

“You missed again,” said the first voice laughing.

The rabbit didn’t waste any time. She burst into a run through the forest trees. She could hear the men chasing close behind. Another crack came from their direction. The rabbit kept running.

The rabbit ran and ran until she reached a large rock in the center of the forest. The rock wasn’t as beautiful as the flowery trees where the rabbit lived comfortably. It was tall and blocked the sun, casting a shadow all around.

She heard the voice of the hunters and ran around the rock until she found a thin path through the stones. It was too small for the humans to walk through. She jumped inside and found to her surprise a hole heading deep inside then up to a safe spot high above the hunters.

The rabbit looked down in relief. She was safe.

After awhile the hunters left and the rabbit could breath easily again. She looked around at the rock, her shelter.

“I will never leave here. You are my refuge and my new home,” said the rabbit to the rock.

“You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the LORD, ‘My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.'”

Psalm 91:1-2
