The Prayer of Examen: How to Find Meaning in Your Day

We all want to find more meaning in our lives. We’re all searching for purpose in the day to day activities we go through. Don’t let another day go by without examining its meaning.

Finding our purpose can be hard especially if we don’t take the time to look for it. When we are set in certain habits and rhythms of our day, we can overlook powerful events that–while small and seemingly insignificant–have important lessons for change.

There is a story unfolding in your life each day. Did you notice it?

God is telling a story and if we take a few moments to observe and listen, we can find the inspiration and purpose we need to get through the day.

Ferris Bueller was right:

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you might miss it.”

A Powerful Prayer Practice: The Prayer of Examen

The Prayer of Examen–taken from the wisdom of St. Ignatius and formed in the Jesuit tradition–can be a powerful way to uncover meaning in our daily lives. This simple prayer method can change the way we view the events of our day and commit us to changing bad habits and adopting new perspective on our world.

The Prayer of Examen includes various methods and habits that call us to give thanks, turn to God for guidance, review our day, and make commitments to change. It is not only a prayer technique, it is a way of life.

I invite you to join me in uncovering the richness of this prayer tradition. Join me in a journey to become more reflective and thankful about our days.

Try this:

  1. Let St. Ignatius teach us the Examen.
  2. Experiment with various forms that the Examen can take.
  3. Follow a how-to guide to the five movements of the Examen.
  4. Integrate the habits contained in the Examen throughout our days.
